Sharjah sits next to Dubai geographically and can be comfortably considered as its suburbs, as
many people work in Dubai and live in Sharjah.Since the 18th century, Sharjah has been
under the rule of the Al Qasimi Empire. The city has also been named as a ‘healthy city’ by
WHO. Due to the influence of Islamic values alcohol is forbidden in Sharjah, and the
restaurants and hotels do not serve it. Since Sharjah is the dry state bars,
pubs, nightclubs are almost non-existent. The city is a center for culture and industry, and
alone contributes 7.4% of the GDP of The UAE the city covers an approximate area of
235 km².Sharjah is regarded as the cultural capital of the UAE and was the Islamic culture
capital in 2014. Sharjah was named World Book Capital for 2019 by UNESCO
